Dear Lori - Here is a picture of my husband, Spencer Overcash S1c when he was in the Navy, stationed on the SS Clark Howell, Armed Guard, Gunner.

One of the sailors on the ship Clark Howell was Spencer Overcash, Mooresville, S.C. He took his basic training at Camp Perry Virginia in 1944. Spencer was on a five inch gun at General Quarters. That was his battle station. In boot camp Spencer had some good sailor friends from his home town; one was Joe Newton, who was assigned to the Drexler. Spencer and Joe wrote the poem "Camp Perry Blues". Spencer saw action on the Howell - they were hit by two or three Kamikazies. Spencer received shrapnal to one leg but survived. He married in 1945 to Margie McCune. They had a wonderful marriage for 56 years until Spencer lost his life to heart trouble and cancer.

He loved his shipmates and ship. These sailors were as usual, the greatest fighting men in the world! Spencer is missed by all who knew him, but he had faith in God, was a deacon in his church, as well as serving in different position in his church. We thank God for a great fighting man and a wonderful friend. God Bless The Sailors of the USA.
