My father was a gunner on the starboard side (I think 40mm) on the Drexler. He shipped out of Boston right out of boot camp. To my knowledge, Okinawa was his first action. As far as personal details go, my father was from Atlanta, Georgia, and he was 34 when he was killed. (I was 6 years old when he died, so my memories of him are somewhat vague.) One of the survivors wrote a letter to my mother, and said my father's gun took a direct hit from a kamikaze that slammed into the ship.
